James his father, James, began teaching her how to play golf when she was five years old. She began competing in tournaments aged 8 and was able to win 50 junior championships within the span of four years. This year's US Women's Open was her first cut. with her father as caddie. She was just 15 when this happened. The sponsors invited her to participate at the 2015 ANA Inspiration LPGA Tour, however, she was not able to make the cut. Lee represented the USA in the Junior Ryder Cup Junior Solheim Cup Curtis Cup as well as the Women's World Amateur Team Championship. In the year 2016, she enrolled at Stanford University and became its most decorated sportsperson at the time. In the following three years, she won nine individual titles. Lee quit Stanford University and turned pro in the year 2019. Her golfing career as an amateur saw her stay for 17 weeks at high in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. Lee took home the Mark H. McCormack medal for 2019, having finished this year with the highest ranking of an amateur. Lee's amateur record included four holes in one as well as one albatross. In her first season, she had two top-10 finishes. She finished 7th at the AIG Women's Open in 2020 which was held on Kingsbarns Golf Links.
